Santa Barbara’s best community swim event
The Reef & Run ocean swim series just returned to East Beach, welcoming 300 excited swimmers in the first week’s races. The Reef & Run event will continue every Thursday for the next 12 weeks, so there are plenty of opportunities to sign up. The swim event starts every Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at East Beach in Santa Barbara. It’s a fun and enjoyable experience for everyone – singles, couples, families, folks young and old. After the swimming races are finished, there is a party with live music, food, beer or hot chocolate and a raffle. There are three swim races: 500m, 1000m (1k,) and 1-mile (their website says they also hold a biathlon, 1k swim and ~3k beach run on occasion). The cost for each race is $15.
If you don’t want to swim, but enjoy being outdoors, there are still ways to be involved. The event is run by volunteers and it’s an easy process to sign up. Check out the Reef & Run website for more information on volunteer sign-ups and about registering for a race: https://reefandrun.org/

Santa Barbara community cycling clubs

This starry night workout featured stationary bikes parked outside their studio for a night of riding for charity. Check out https://starcycleride.com/studios/santa-barbara/ for more information on spinning classes.
If stationary bikes aren’t your thing, and you’d prefer to pedal around the beautiful scenery of Santa Barbara, Goleta, Montecito and other nearby towns with a group of fellow cycling enthusiasts, then you will want to join the Santa Barbara Cyclists-Goleta Valley Cycling Club via their Meetup page: https://www.meetup.com/Santa-Barbara-Cyclists/events/ . This bicycle club has been around since 1977 and has hundreds of members and ongoing events. Members meet at a spot and then ride together sometimes making a pit-stop for coffee along the route.
Examples of fun, upcoming routes include ‘Shoreline Park to Field & Fort’ or ‘Tuckers to Goleta Canyon’ or ‘Rincon Brewery to Ventura.’ Their “About” section couldn’t say it better:
“Join SBC & GVCC and get more out of cycling both physically and emotionally with a group of passionate cyclists who ride for fun and camaraderie. Get a good work out, maintain a hobby that includes socializing, the outdoors, and share inspiration by riding with a group who love cycling. We aim to bring together those who share our passion for cycling and meeting new people. All levels are welcomed.”

The California Central Coast is a world-class wine destination. Santa Barbara wines rival those from international regions and have garnered top honors and awards. From humble “Mission grapes” to present day award-winning varietals, Santa Barbara’s history of wine is as rich and full-bodied as its Pinot Noir. If you love wine, Santa Barbara is a premier destination for wine tasting and the so-called Urban Wine Trail is an easy way to try several wines that this area is known for while also experiencing the beauty and character of Santa Barbara’s distinct neighborhoods.
A brief history of wine in Santa Barbara
The “Mission grape” was introduced to greater California in the late 18th century by the Franciscan missionaries. With warm sun rays and coastal mountain ranges, the Franciscan missionaries in the late 18th century considered Santa Barbara and other mission locations ideal for growing wine grapes. However, during the Prohibition era, this grape largely disappeared from California. Fast forward to 1962, when Pierre Lafond founded the first post-prohibition commercial winery in Santa Barbara County. It would be just a couple years later when he started a winery on Anacapa Street, nearly a stone’s throw from the beautiful Pacific Ocean. For years, Lafond’s Santa Barbara Winery was the only tasting room in the city, but these days, Santa Barbara’s wine cup runneth over and it seems a new tasting room springs up regularly.
What is Santa Barbara’s Urban Wine Trail?
The Urban Wine Trail initially referred to about 26 tasting rooms located within blocks from each other. Santa Barbara’s Urban Wine Trail stretches across two well-known neighborhoods, each distinct in character. However, more tasting rooms are being added in nearby neighborhoods and the website https://urbanwinetrailsb.com/ has taken it upon themselves to expand the boundaries of the trail to include five neighborhoods, pushing the area outwards toward Goleta and also Summerland. You can visit https://urbanwinetrailsb.com/the-trail-map/ for an interactive trail map to help you navigate your own wine crawl.
The Urban Wine Trail is an ideal way for wine lovers staying in Santa Barbara to taste the region’s best wines without having to drive about 45 minutes or more outside the city to visit the wineries. There truly is no better way to experience Santa Barbara than through wine tasting.

Making the 25th anniversary of Condé Nast Traveler’s “Where to travel next: 2021 Hot List” is our beloved Santa Barbara, listed as the only California city, holding its own among nine global destinations chosen by the magazine’s highly esteemed travel editors.
The article specifically cites the new State Street Promenade, which transformed the downtown strip into a pedestrian mall during the pandemic, allowing restaurants to expand onto the sidewalk and into the street in order to host al fresco dining and keep businesses afloat. On the heels of that very well received transition, Santa Barbara installed new electric bike rental locations, where riders can easily install an app to rent an e-bike at one of the 30 docking stations around town. Anyone who spent a bit of time in Santa Barbara over the years, knows it’s a bike-friendly and pedestrian-friendly town with convenient bike lanes and lots of public transportation. But these recent changes exemplify Santa Barbara’s foot-forward approach into the future of green mobility.
As for mass transportation into SB, the new flights started by Southwest Airlines direct into Santa Barbara Municipal Airport this year made headlines. Direct flights to and from Denver, Las Vegas and Oakland benefit out of town visitors to Santa Barbara who can now avoid LAX all together. Southwest Airlines offers low-cost flights and does not charge baggage fees, making it an especially favored airline for those carrying surfboards, golf clubs or other bulky sized luggage. It’s likely that other airlines will follow suit.
Now Santa Barbara is easier than ever to get to and it’s easier than ever to get around on foot or e-bike once you’re here!
As for activities, the Condé Nast editors made sure to mention the debut of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art’s new multi-floor wing.

On June 15, 2021 the State of California will reopen and while some limited measures will remain in place, Californians will see life returning to the normal we once knew. Santa Barbara County will keep the current masking guidance until June 15, and after that, things will start to look even brighter as we head into the summer months!
At the time of writing, Santa Barbara County data showed the percentage of eligible population fully vaccinated to be at more than 64 percent. Since April 21, restaurants, gyms, wineries and breweries, movie theaters, museums, the zoo, places of worship and retail businesses have been open in Santa Barbara County with limited capacities. But very soon, everyday life will start to feel even more like the normal we knew before COVID-19, as the above mentioned businesses will open to full capacity in Santa Barbara without social distancing requirements after June 15.
Of course, The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) strongly encourages residents to sign up to https://myturn.ca.gov/ to find out when it’s your turn to get vaccinated.
Masks and maskless in Santa Barbara, indoors and outdoors
As per the Santa Barbara County website, “everyone should remember that outdoor activities are much lower risk than indoor activities…,” so make sure to take advantage of the warm summer weather on the Central Coast and enjoy some of these popular warm weather activities in Santa Barbara. He also added that fully vaccinated people can entertain other fully vaccinated people without masks if they are in their own home and not in public.
Concerts, sporting events and festivals (5,000+ indoors; 10,000+ outdoors) will have recommendations and/or requirements for confirming proof of vaccination. And youth day camps must follow specific portions of the state’s K-12 school guidance, according to CDPH. Click here for more information.
As we move forward into and past the summer, California will keep a close eye on COVID-19 vaccination and infection rates and keep these guidelines in place until at least October 1, 2021. The state will also continue to monitor many COVID-19 variants. You can read the most recent variant data reported by the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department, which partners with Cottage Health and UC Santa Barbara to research variants present in the community. Knowing this data helps provide some peace of mind, as data revealed less than 2 % and less than 1 % of those classified as “variants of concern” or “variants of interest.”
Feeling anxious easing back into life after COVID-19? Here are a few tips that will help you feel at ease while returning to normal in Santa Barbara.
According to a June 3 Noozhawk report, there was a 38 percent decrease in new cases when compared to the week before. If you’re still uneasy, that’s normal. Some people may be more comfortable returning back to previous ways of life quickly, while others might be more cautious for any number of valid reasons. Some might also feel a bit of pressure from friends or family to step outside of one’s comfort zone before ready to do so. If you feel anxious, the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department listed a few tips to help you ease safely back into life after the pandemic ends and restrictions begin to lift in California on June 15.
- You can also choose to stay in outdoor settings or remain at a comfortable distance from others.
- Be kind and patient with yourself and this process. You may want to choose one of the many outdoor and open spaces in Santa Barbara to help you feel more at ease. Opt for a maskless walk at Shoreline Park, bring your dog to Hendry’s Beach, go for a long bike ride or a hike in the Santa Ynez Mountains. Check out our list of stress-relieving outdoor activities in Santa Barbara to soothe your body and mind.
But if you are keen to get back to the restaurant scene and enjoy a glass of wine or craft beer in the Funk Zone, or if you can’t wait to shop the boutiques on State Street, you can feel more secure that Santa Barbara County Public Health Department keeps the public updated with regular reports, which you can check here.
You can read more about the CDPH guidance at: https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CID/DCDC/Pages/COVID-19/Beyond-Blueprint-Framework.aspx

Nestled between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, Santa Barbara is an ideal holiday destination for lovers of the outdoors and nature, especially during the spring and summer months. Surfers, sailors and sun worshipers can enjoy some of the most beautiful coastline California has to offer, while hikers and bikers can test their endurance with trails extending deep into the Los Padres National Forest. But if your idea of vacation aligns more with relaxation instead of activity, the American Riviera offers plenty of leisurely-paced outdoor fun, like world class golf courses with ocean views, family picnic spots on the beach and romantic sunset sailing. Whether you’re up for a challenge or want to take it slow and easy, here are three of the most popular warm weather activities and outdoor things to do in Santa Barbara.
Golfing in Santa Barbara
Santa Barbara golf courses are especially scenic with both ocean views as well as mountain views. The Sandpiper Golf Club in Goleta is a championship golf course that was rated by “Golf Digest” as one of the top 25 public golf courses in the nation. Players of all skill levels can enjoy rolling fairways that have hosted several professional tournaments. A round of golf is truly an experience to remember with breathtaking ocean vistas and mountain views from every hole.
Set against the rolling foothills, golfers at Glen Annie Golf Club can also enjoy sweeping ocean and mountain views while playing a challenging layout. Relax in style with a drink at the clubhouse while overlooking this gorgeous landscape. This lovely location is also a great venue for weddings and special events.
Picnic at Lizards Mouth or hike Gaviota Peak
For those who love nature but appreciate a more leisurely hike, Lizard’s Mouth offers a relaxing setting that opens to scenic views. Hike or bike this quarter mile route off of West Camino Cielo Road and enjoy a picnic in the warm California sun.
For those who are up for a challenge, Gaviota Peak is a 6.5-mile loop hike up to a 2,458-foot peak. Not for the faint of heart, this hike is perfect for the outdoor adventurer and is only about a 30-minute drive outside of Downtown Santa Barbara.
Sailing to Channel Islands National Park and whale watching
One of the great things about sailing in Santa Barbara is that you can really choose your own adventure. Opt for a sunset sail and let the pros handle the work while you relax on the open water with a glass of wine in hand. Another option is to take the kids whale watching and enjoy an educational tour of the harbor and learn a little about the local sea life. Others might like a longer seafaring adventure sailing out to the Channel Islands National Park. These five islands are just off the coast of Santa Barbara but are home to wonderous plant and animal life, as well as raw beauty that’s perfect for touring via kayak and terrain ideal for hiking. Check out our article on four great sailing trips to take in Santa Barbara.
Enjoy Santa Barbara’s Beaches
What would a trip to Santa Barbara be without at least some time spent enjoying the beach? There is a beach for every mood, be it volleyball playing on East Beach, playing catch with the family dog at Hendry’s Beach or trying stand-up paddle boarding near the Harbor. But above all, the American Riviera is the perfect destination to just relax and work on your tan.
Arroyo Burro Beach is a dog-friendly beach off Cliff Drive that’s known to locals as Hendry’s Beach. It is located below the Douglas Family Preserve. The left of the beach is where dogs can run free off-leash.
Leadbetter Beach is a popular beach across from Santa Barbara City College and is just west of the Harbor. The long strip of grass makes this beach a great spot for families to picnic and then have some water and sand fun. Check out the surf report and bring your longboard.
Just next door is Butterfly Beach in Montecito. Bask in the laid-back sophistication of this chic and chill beach in a town that’s home to quite a few celebrities and most recently royalty, since Prince Harry and Meghan moved in. Butterfly Beach is along Channel Drive, just across the way from the Four Seasons Biltmore.

You might not have noticed, but believe it or not, Santa Barbara has its own airport. A variety of commuter airlines have serviced the Santa Barbara Municipal Airport over the years, but most recently only United Airlines, Alaska Airlines and American Airlines regularly operated flights out of this quaint airport, and flight options were limited. But a long-awaited dream for travelers in love with the Central Coast has finally come true. Southwest Airlines launched service from Santa Barbara Airport on April 12, 2021. Southwest Airlines will service flights to and from Las Vegas, Oakland and Denver from Santa Barbara. With the new, convenient and low-cost flight option in and out of Santa Barbara airport, Southwest Airlines is poised to become the dominant air carrier with an initial schedule of five daily nonstop flights in and out of Santa Barbara to either Las Vegas, Denver or Oakland to start.
Direct flights into Santa Barbara will increase; leisure travel benefits
As we leave the COVID-19 era behind, this is good news for Santa Barbara travel and hospitality industries, as well as travelers. Local hospitality and Santa Barbara businesses are prepared to welcome the new influx of leisure travelers, meeting attendees and newlyweds to the American Riviera. The tourism bureau committed $250,000 to support the new Southwest flights through marketing campaigns and a variety of upgrades have been made to the airport to accommodate expanded capacity in travelers and their luggage. The new direct flights into Santa Barbara by Southwest Airlines mark the beginning of a turnaround in leisure travel, which was hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. As lockdowns ease across the state of California, the summer months ahead are looking brighter than ever along the Central Coast.
Southwest Airlines offers low-cost flights and does not charge baggage fees, making it an especially favored airline for those carrying surfboards, golf clubs or other bulky sized luggage. But not to be outdone, it seems the competition from Southwest Airlines new routes has prompted United Airlines to add additional flights to its Denver-Santa Barbara route and American Airlines’ is offering a new, temporary and direct flight into the Santa Barbara Airport from Chicago, which runs May through September of 2021. Depending on the demand, American Airlines could consider expanding the number of flights, according to a KEYT news report. United Airlines is also looking to add a route from Santa Barbara to Chicago and Alaska Airlines plans to add daily service from Santa Barbara to San Diego in the summer. Delta Airlines might resume its service between Santa Barbara and Salt Lake City, which it suspended last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Deanna Zachrisson, Santa Barbara Airport’s business development manager, told Noozhawk. It’s all good news for travelers coming from around the country and set on Santa Barbara as a final destination for either leisure or business travel.
In all and including the new Southwest direct routes, Santa Barbara’s airport services non-stop flights from Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Las Vegas, Oakland, Phoenix, Portland, San Francisco and Seattle. Getting to Santa Barbara by air has never been more convenient.
As an alternative to flying, Santa Barbara is also easily accessible via train. Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner route boasts scenic ocean views from San Luis Obispo through Santa Barbara and then on to Los Angeles and San Diego. The Santa Barbara train station is steps away from both Downtown and the beach and walking distance to many of our short-term Santa Barbara vacation rental homes.
If you’d like to fly into Santa Barbara and then continue your adventure by car, Santa Barbara Airport offers a variety of on-airport car rental services. Enjoy scenic drives along the coast or into wine country, then relax and enjoy your stay at one of our deluxe vacation rental homes within walking or short driving distance to popular Santa Barbara shops, restaurants and beaches.
